Tattoos are becoming increasingly popular and it seems that they can be seen almost everywhere you turn. Some people don’t stop at one either, they have two or three and then there are those that have half sleeves, full sleeves and even full-body coverage. It is safe to say that over the years tattoos have become more socially accepted but are they ok in the workplace? If so should they be shown or disclosed during an interview or should you risk keeping them hidden?
It would seem that the rules surrounding tattoos differ from business to business. Quite often the values and status of the business play a big role in whether or not they are ok. For example, some companies will allow tattoos as long as they can be concealed, this may be down to the job role being customer based whereby you need to maintain a smart and professional look. On the other hand, some businesses allow tattoos that can be seen as long as they aren’t offensive to those who will see them. Tattoos on the hands or on the face however can be a problem for many employers yet there are still those who allow them, particularly if the role doesn’t involve dealing with customers face to face.
The problem many faces when searching for work is whether or not they should conceal their tattoos in an interview. It is quite often that the job role doesn’t specify whether or not tattoos are ok leaving employees with a difficult decision to make. First impressions you see are paramount in an interview, make a wrong move and you can be disregarded before the questions even begin.
If successful in getting an interview for a role you have applied for, researching the company thoroughly can help to give you an indication as to whether or not you should show or hide your tattoos. A customer-based role would suggest that you would whereas a job behind the scenes or a job in the creative sector may suggest you don’t need to.
My own personal experience in the matter has taught me that covering tattoos that can be seen is a good idea. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t disclose the fact that you have them though. Enquiring about your tattoos is also a good idea, particularly if you are confident that at some point they would become visible to others. This ensures that employers don’t get any surprises and that you know exactly what is expected of you.
For those who have tattoos that they are unable to conceal hopefully your personality and skills set will be what the employer bases their decision on. Although this isn’t what the majority of us want to hear it is an unfortunate fact that tattoos can have an impact on whether or not a person is successful in getting a job. So the next time you consider getting a tattoo be certain that it won’t have an impact on the career you want to pursue.
